Chapter Fifteen

It’s funny, but on the way over, I actually noticed the absence of an owl overhead, flying in the same direction as me. What a strange swing from noticing them every time I step outside to noticing when they aren’t there.

I officially didn’t understand my brain.

My dad appeared next to me once I was out of the restaurant and clear of the lodge.

“That was a short rest,” I said.

“I might need another soon. Just thought I’d check in. Where are you headed now?”

“To Landon Hawker’s house.”

“And this Landon fellow is… who?” my dad asked as I took large, jolting steps down the mountain path.

“Just a friend. When we had a witch circle, there were five of us, and he was a part of it.”

“What’s a witch circle? You mean a coven?”

“No, the Coven is the larger organization in Eastwind. A circle consists of a witch of each of the five winds who combine their magic. Ours was the first one in hundreds of years, since the only other recent Fifth Wind is Ruby, and she’s always refused to join one.”

“Who else was in your circle?”

“Eva, who also stayed behind in New Orleans, but she was originally from there. Then there was Tanner, Donovan, and Landon.”

“Ah.”

I jerked my head around to get a read on him. I didn’t trust the tone of that “ah.”

“What do you mean, ah?”

“Nothing. I’m just glad to have a better understanding of your relationship with Landon before we visit him.”

I narrowed my eyes. “I think I know what you mean, and for the record, I haven’t had a relationship with everyone in my circle.”

He held up his hands in surrender. “It’d be fine if you did. You’re an adult, it’s a small town. I know how those things can go.”

“Dad.”

“What? I’m saying I’m not judging! I’m pretty sure your mother had a relationship with another woman before we met anyway.”

“Dad!”

“What? It’s natural. Sexual preference is a spectrum.”

“Ugh. You think I don’t know that? For fang’s sake… It wasn’t like that with Eva, either, and it’s never been and never will be like that with Landon. He’s like a little brother.”

“I once had a girlfriend who thought of me like a little brother for a long time before we hooked up.”

“Twenty tines,” I breathed. “If you had any use for money, I would pay you to stop talking about your and mom’s individual sexual histories right now.”

He chuckled. “I just thought you might be interested. I never knew about my parents’—”

“Lucky you.”

“And it’s a natural process. No shame in experimenting and making mistakes in love. Sometimes it’s the only way to learn.”

We made it to the bottom of the mountain, and I had half a mind to stop by Ruby’s first to anchor him to a copper bowl on the parlor table.

But I didn’t.

I think I should get some credit for that great show of restraint.

I knew Landon used to have a tendency to work late at his job of counterfeiting lost paperwork at the Parchment
